Both have influenced generations of new storytellers. Their lasting mark on world culture will be remembered by future generations like The Odyssey of Homer is remembered today. Tolkien and Lucas are at once so similar and so incredibly different.<br /> <br />On receiving a screenplay for a proposed movie adaptation of The Lord of the Rings in the late 1950's by Morton Grady Zimmerman, Tolkien wrote:<br /> <br />"I would ask them to make an effort of imagination sufficient to understand the irritation (and on occasion the resentment) of an author, who finds, increasingly as he proceeds, his work treated as it would seem carelessly in general, in places recklessly, and with no evident signs of any appreciation of what it is all about."<br /> <br />Tolkien was adamant about the methodology by which his mythology was created. He spent over ten years organizing the pieces of history and lanquage that gives the Lord of the Rings it's "impression of depth". He was absolutely determined to give his story a life of it's own through a thickly woven tapestry of myth.<br /> <br />Lucas started out just as adamant. During the writing and filming of A New Hope, Lucas was in constant contact with Campbell. He was checking up on his myth, making sure all the pieces fit into Campbell's theory of the Heroes Journey.<br /> <br />So what happened with the Prequels? We have the Silmarillion and the New Trilogy. Tolkien had this to say:<br /> <br />" I am afraid that the presentation will need a lot of work, and I work so slowly. The legends have to be worked over (they were written at different times, some many years ago) and made consistent..."<br /> <br />There is quite a bit more to that quote, but this part speaks to what I feel is the greatest failure of Lucas' Prequels. No consistency. This is in part due to the the fact that Tolkien was working nearly alone on his great work. Where right from the beginning, Lucas allowed many writers to tell many stories about Star Wars. Before the 90's there wasn't a lot of talk of canon. Then all of a sudden authors had to follow a relatively strict set of guidelines, including that almost no one was allowed to even mention what would become Prequel history.<br /> <br />I have spoken about this many times. I am disappointed that so many authors were discredited when the Prequels were released. These stories had laid down the basis of who major characters were and why they acted the way they did. Only to be, in some cases, completely erased, and then replaced with Jar-Jar Binks, Qui- Gon Jinn, and Jango Bango Fett.<br /> <br />Some say Lucas had every right to tell the story the way he wanted to because it is his story. I say I would agree with this, had he not allowed so many others to imbue the myth of Star Wars with their own creativity. When that happened he passed the torch to them, and became one of many who would be an influence to the myth. This may have been his biggest mistake.<br /> <br />Tolkien had the sense of mind, and maybe the neurotic need to complete his myth the way he, and he alone saw fit. Had he been alive to see Peter Jackson's vision of his myth, I believe he would have been disappointed. He probably regretted till the day he died selling the movie rights at all. Tolkien would probably be disappointed in general to see the way that storytelling has progressed since he laid down the first history of the Children of Illuvatar.<br /> <br />Much of today's storytelling uses mythology in a bastardized way. The pieces are all there in many cases, yet only as a surface to cover for the marketing of merchandise.<br /> <br />The relative opposite of this is J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter. Considering this is a post about Tolkien and Lucas I won't get too far off track, but bear with me. Rowling's genius is in the fact that the story ends. As of now there is a supposed 8th book that was written for a charity event, but is not an actual part of the Potter myth. Otherwise it is a contained story, no unnecessary T.V. shows or expanded universe garbage, other than fan fiction. Hopefully it will stay that way. Because Rowling seemed to know that to go beyond, would be to stretch the story too thin.<br /> <br />Which is what exactly has happened to Star Wars. There is no way to keep up with the amount of comics, games, T.V. shows and other spin-offs that are constantly created. So much so that there are people today who don't know that there was an original Star Wars trilogy!<br /> <br />The saddest part about this is that the majority of the creators of these spin-offs do not care about Star Wars, or mythology, or storytelling. It is all about the money. Therein lies the true difference between Tolkien and Lucas.<br /> <br />Tolkien refused the initial screenplay offer from Zimmerman. Why? Because he knew it would destroy the myth he had worked so hard to create. Lucas apparently is the one who "showed no sign of appreciating what it is all about". I hate to say it, but it certainly shows in the Prequels.<br /> <br />How many lightsabers, lunchboxes and t-shirts can we sell with this thing? A lot, and people won't even know that they have been duped into buying all this crap. George should have known better. He should have treated his myth with the same sensitivity as Tolkien and Rowling. Why he didn't is something we fans will probably never understand.<br /> <br />That is why it is up to us. It is why I am so glad to see so many Prequel Rewrites out there. That fact shows that Campbell's belief that myth springs from within is true. We knew that it was wrong and now we are doing our best to put it right.<br /> <br />Hopefully, the rest of the world will see this and start to think with more sensitivity themselves. Probably not, but there will always be rebellion in the empire.Fungleberryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00204297577924663423noreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6253196689922088661.post-74776536328889911892011-01-02T03:22:00.000-08:002011-01-02T03:50:07.867-08:00If you strike me down, I shall become more powerful than you can possibly imagine!<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_LZED6DGdW0U/TSBlTuBjs1I/AAAAAAAAALA/c2AdPWbfQNY/s1600/Grapefruit%2521.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 308px; height: 400px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_LZED6DGdW0U/TSBlTuBjs1I/AAAAAAAAALA/c2AdPWbfQNY/s400/Grapefruit%2521.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5557553329621676882" /></a><br /><p style="margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px Helvetica">Thanks everyone for continuing to check up on my progress here! Sadly there hasn't been a lot of Star Wars action for me lately. Those of you have kept up on my posts here will know how busy I have been! For those of you who haven't I'll give you a brief update!</p> <p style="margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px Helvetica; min-height: 14.0px"><br /></p> <p style="margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px Helvetica">I currently work for a company that cares for disabled adults. I work in a home and help take care of four men. When I applied for this job, the idea was that I would be able to make a decent pay and have all the time and energy needed to make my art, my way. For a while this was true, and it was good! I was working overnights and my job was to sleep! I would get out of work in the morning, go straight to my studio space, make art all day with a fresh mind and head back to work around 11 pm.</p> <p style="margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px Helvetica; min-height: 14.0px"><br /></p> <p style="margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px Helvetica">Then my world was turned upside down. I won't go into the dirty details. I quit during the summer of 2008 to spend three months traveling the United States. </p> <p style="margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px Helvetica; min-height: 14.0px"><br /></p> <p style="margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px Helvetica">After my adventures I got right back into taking care of the disabled for the same company. Instead of third shift, I chose to work a second shift. The change was immediate, and I rose to the challenge. I had nearly no time to make art. My mind and energy were forcefully diverted.</p> <p style="margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px Helvetica; min-height: 14.0px"><br /></p> <p style="margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px Helvetica">I did my best. That wasn't enough. The job has continued to drain me physically and mentally. Making art was beginning to become a past time, a hobby rather than a focus. Thankfully, I noticed this and knew that it was not what I wanted.</p> <p style="margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px Helvetica; min-height: 14.0px"><br /></p> <p style="margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px Helvetica">Early 2010, my aunt Chandra was getting work done on her back tattoo. She was my eye-opener. Flat out she said "Caleb, you could make a lot of money doing tattoos!". I have been making art all my life. I have had a lot of people ask me to draw up tattoos, and many told me I should get into tattooing. Yet, I never seriously considered becoming a tattoo artist.</p> <p style="margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px Helvetica; min-height: 14.0px"><br /></p> <p style="margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px Helvetica">For the past ten years I have been literally giving my art away. One of my reasons for this was the belief that, up until now, I had not earned the right to put a price tag on my work. I love giving my work away. Literally, hundreds of times I was given the opportunity to make someone's day. Friends and others would come into my studio, they would see a painting and connect with it. I am very grateful for the ability to see when this happens. The only option was to make sure that when I saw that connection the work went home with that person.</p> <p style="margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px Helvetica; min-height: 14.0px"><br /></p> <p style="margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px Helvetica">The obvious problem with this is that it is very hard to put food in my belly this way! The best benefit is that I have developed a strong following! Tattooing came to me at the time I needed it the most. It is a career defined by making art, that is also a viable way of making money. The main downfall is the high amount of very poor tattoos that many people want. </p> <p style="margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px Helvetica; min-height: 14.0px"><br /></p> <p style="margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px Helvetica">I am willing to deal with that because I know that there are a great many people out there who want amazing works of art on their body. I want to be the artist that creates that art! </p> <p style="margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px Helvetica; min-height: 14.0px"><br /></p> <p style="margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px Helvetica">So I am now a part of a great tattoo shop, Mom & Pop Tattoo and Piercing in Fall River, MA. My apprenticeship has been an excellent experience. I am being taught about the fundamentals of tattooing, and I am teaching about the fundamentals of fine art. </p> <p style="margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px Helvetica; min-height: 14.0px"><br /></p> <p style="margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px Helvetica">You might think that fine art would be the basis of tattooing, but it is not. In fact in my area that is the exact opposite. I am proud to be one of a number of artists working very hard to raise the standards of the fine art of tattooing.</p> <p style="margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px Helvetica; min-height: 14.0px"><br /></p> <p style="margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px Helvetica">So, what does any of this have to do with Star Wars? I love Star Wars. I hate the prequels. I am willing to do anything that will get me to the end goal of making this comic to bring back the high art of storytelling and mythology. </p> <p style="margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px Helvetica; min-height: 14.0px"><br /></p> <p style="margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px Helvetica">Right now I have to sacrifice nearly my entire life so that I can make a 180 degree turn around. Though unlike Luke I am more than willing to admit my fear and the need to overcome it! First and foremost, thanks to everyone who has continued to visit my little blog here! </div><div><br /></div><div>Ready? Here goes!</div><div><br /></div><div>The Han Solo Benefit Art Show my wife and I put together went amazing! We couldn't have done it without the good folks at Mom and Pop Tattoo and Piercing, or without all the excellent people who came out to party with us! We raised a lot of money for a very worthy shelter in the city of Fall River, MA. I painted over 30 works just for this show! The Yoda painting at the top of this post was one of the works sold! </div><div><br /></div><div>I recently decided to do a 180 with my life! I have worked with disabled adults for the last 4 years. The job is great, pay is great, the benefits are great but the stress and drain are not. For a while I let my fear control me and keep me paralyzed. Gotta have a job, gotta pay for food, art supplies, rent, car, stuff and all the rest of life's costs. </div><div><br /></div><div>There are many fields of artistic creation. Many of them do not pay well, there are a million other young hopefuls competing for them, and are extremely constricting on the artist. I have avoided the gallery scene, and stepped far away from the realms of web design and graphic arts. I have always chosen to do things my way. </div><div><br /></div><div>For the last ten years I have given away my art. Rarely, if ever, selling a piece or taking on commissions. I focused on spreading my name and giving people the ability to get to know my work. This has returned good things for me in many, many ways. Only now have I begun to feel I have earned the right to sell my work. The success of the Han Solo Benefit Art show was definitely fuel for the fire!</div><div><br /></div><div>Recently my aunt Chandra suggested I become a tattoo artist. Many people in my life have suggested this to me, and always I brushed it off. Partly because of arrogance, and partly because of fear. (The Dark Side) Her words really inspired me. "You would be amazing at this and people would fall over to get in line!" (less important but just as nice, she said "You would make a lot of money!")</div><div><br /></div><div>I have always felt that things happen exactly when they are supposed to. I do not believe that life is predetermined, but instead just waiting for you to be ready. When the time comes, bang! You just know it. </div><div><br /></div><div>So I started looking into Tattoo apprenticeships. A shop in Fall River, MA was accepting and I went down to check it out! The master artist and owner there immediately accepted me, based solely on my work and reputation! I offered to trade a mural painting for their shop, The Ink Clinic, for the apprenticeship.</div><div><br /></div><div>The story doesn't end there! My friend Sean Theroux owns Mom and Pop Tattoo and Piercing, another tattoo shop in Fall River. (You can tell I spend a lot of time in the city!) When I told him about the apprenticeship he was a little shocked that I hadn't asked to him about it! He immediately offered to have me apprentice at his shop! </div><div><br /></div><div>A little background. Sean would have been great friends with Han Solo. He's the definition of a heroic scoundrel. Side show magician, licensed piercer, justice of the peace and a thousand other titles follow his name! With him there is never a dull moment! For example: He blew a tremendous fireball with oil and flame hidden in his trick bible after he married my wife and I!</div><div><br /></div><div>When he offered me an apprenticeship I knew I could not turn it down! So I jumped in, head first and have been loving it ever since! Not only am I learning from the master tattoo artists there, I am also teaching them my knowledge of painting, drawing and all that goes with 2d studies!</div><div><br /></div><div>I am <i>also</i> painting the mural for the Ink Clinic! A giant work based on the history of tattooing. With many styles and themes represented! </div><div><br /></div><div>So for the next year I will be working seven days a week. 4 days working with disabled adults, and 3 at Mom and Pop learning the craft once I finish the Ink Clinic Mural. The sacrifices are great, but worthy. I have had to put 90% of my life aside to focus. It feels great. I feel charged and ready.</div><div><br /></div><div>Star Wars is always on my mind. Like a best friend, always ready with advice, and always offering a new way to look at the world. Everyday life constantly influences the work I am doing with the Improved Prequels. </div><div><br /></div><div>While technically alone working on the Project, there are a few people I am in contact with who I bounce ideas off of. Kind of like having a few Joseph Campbell's around to guide the myth. One you all should really get to know is Tony Pacitti, the author of the best selling memoir: My Best Friend is a Wookiee. </div><div><br /></div><div>He recently has been a great inspiration and a beacon in the darkness. It was great reading his book and finding parallel experiences that helped to bring new understanding to my own. His love for Star Wars is true and excellent! </div><div><br /></div><div>Patience is the key my friends. I hope that any and all of you feel free to contact me! I love to talk Star Wars! The Improved Prequels are my life's work. Like George in the early days I will defy the standards of the day, I will do things in a way that most will think is crazy. Hopefully it will be! Whether it pays off or not is completely irrelevant! The point is myth, storytelling and that 10% everyone else gets to see. </div><div><br /></div><div>Thank you George, Jim, Frank, Joeseph without you I would not be who I am today. Thanks also to Douglass, who taught me how to Not Panic. 42. </div><div><br /></div><div>Much love </div><div><br /></div><div>The Forest is with you, always</div><div><br /></div><div>Caleb</div>Fungleberryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00204297577924663423noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6253196689922088661.post-91543130342947733532010-08-09T08:57:00.000-07:002010-08-09T09:30:26.924-07:00Star Wars for a Good Cause!<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_LZED6DGdW0U/TGAl7PH7zkI/AAAAAAAAAKk/j575u3J8fc4/s1600/vader.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 259px; height: 400px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_LZED6DGdW0U/TGAl7PH7zkI/AAAAAAAAAKk/j575u3J8fc4/s400/vader.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5503440444249067074" /></a><br /><p style="margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px Helvetica">Star Wars for a Good Cause!</p> <p style="margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px Helvetica; min-height: 14.0px"><br /></p> <p style="margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px Helvetica">I will be having my first Solo gallery show opening this month! For now we will offer up some tasty treats before we put up the whole comic! Character sketches, landscapes, and other fun stuff!<div><br /></div><div>If you have been reading closely you will know that we are using some aspects of the Prequels as they are. We take the good stuff and combine it with history and imagery created before the Prequels. </div><div><br /></div><div>In this example we have a character sketch of Anakin Skywalker. His face is drawn from screenshots taken of the actor Hayden Christensen. The costume however is based off of Ralph McQuarrie's early concept sketches of Han Solo. The blaster Anakin is carrying is also from a concept sketch by McQuarrie.</div><div><br /></div><div>I like this costume very much because it feels like it belongs in an earlier time in Star Wars history. That's because it actually is from the earliest time of Star Wars history! It also is a great foreshadowing of what will become the iconic armor of Darth Vader. </div><div><br /></div><div>Many people have said to me: "Why don't you create your own original story and your own original characters?"</div><div><br /></div><div>The short answer is this: "Because as I have explored the world and life, I have found that everything is derived from something else. There is no such thing as truly original thought."</div><div><br /></div><div>T.S. Eliot had this to say about a similar subject:</div><div><p style="margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; line-height: 15.0px; font: 11.0px Verdana; color: #242424"><i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;"><br /></span></i></p><p style="margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; line-height: 15.0px; font: 11.0px Verdana; color: #242424"><i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;">"One of the surest tests [of the superiority or inferiority of a poet] is the way in which a poet borrows. Immature poets imitate; mature poets steal; bad poets deface what they take, and good poets make it into something better, or at least something different.</span></i><b><i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;"> </span></i></b><i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;">The good poet welds his theft into a whole of feeling which is unique, utterly different than that from which it is torn; the bad poet throws it into something which has no cohesion. A good poet will usually borrow from authors remote in time, or alien in language, or diverse in interest."</span></i></p></div><div><br /></div><div>The Original Trilogy is a collection of blatant thefts from history, mythology, movies, pop culture and so much more. Lucas used to understand the importance of this.</div><div><br /></div><div>Most important to me is keeping the <i>feel</i> of Star Wars. Most of the time when watching the Prequel movies I feel like I am watching a modern Sci-Fi movie that just so happens to be called Star Wars and has lightsabers in it. Every once in a while there is a scene when all of a sudden it feels like the classic Star Wars. A feeling which is ripped away with Jar-Jar's slapstick comedy and extraneous plot movement devices like pod racing. </div><div><br /></div><div>This feeling is important because we want to make sure that we retain recognizability as well as adding a flavor not seen in the Prequel movies. The feel of Star Wars is even more important for the connection between the two trilogies. </div><div><br /></div><div>That's the feeling we want to carry through this entire project. We want you to get caught up and get lost in the Universe we all love so much! We will weld the theft into the tapestry of history already in existence to give the Improved Prequels the honor they deserve.</div><div><br /></div><div>We are working very hard! More to come soon!</div><div><br /></div><div>Caleb</div><div><br /></div><div>"I did feel something! I could almost see the remote!"</div><div><br /></div><div>"That's good! You've taken your first step into a larger world...."</div>Fungleberryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00204297577924663423noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6253196689922088661.post-27461761812037448872010-06-17T14:09:00.001-07:002010-06-17T17:36:41.886-07:00Who's the more foolish? Who was a pupil of mine until he turned to evil, helped the Empire hunt down and destroy the Jedi Knights. He betrayed and murdered your father." The most famous lie of Star Wars. Point of view...</div><div><br /></div><div>Grand Moff Tarkin offers Leia a chance to save her home world by giving up the Rebels hidden base. "Dantooine, they're on Dantooine..." Leia's last hope effort to prevent the destruction of Alderaan.</div><div><br /></div><div>Tarkin then gives the order to destroy Alderaan anyway... and is astounded to find out later that Leia had lied to him about the Rebel Base on Dantooine.</div><div><br /></div><div>Lastly is 3PO lies to a Stormtrooper on the Death Star so he and R2 can get back to the Millenium Falcon. "All this commotion has short circuited my counterpart here, I'd like to take him down to maintenance."</div><div><br /></div><div>The difference between these lies and the lies of the Prequel Trilogy is that in A New Hope they are used purposefully. Most importantly is Obi-Wan's lie to Luke about his father. What he told Luke WAS true, from a certain point of view... That makes all the difference.</div><div><br /></div><div>The lie that Qui-Gon Jinn was the Jedi Master who instructed Obi-Wan is useless. More importantly it contradicts the Original Trilogy. The lie that Yoda would use a lightsaber as an 800 year old Jedi Master is a contradiction and it also debases an amazing character. These lies don't serve to pull two stories together. They split them apart.</div><div><br /></div><div>The most beautiful lies of A New Hope are told by everyone's favorite droids! The concept that droids could, and would lie is fantastic. The droids lies are also explained... In the radio drama adaptation of A New Hope, Leia gives R2 and 3PO a special command that allows them to lie on her behalf to protect the information in R2. This makes these lies useful, plot driven and absolutely imperative to storytelling. </div><div><br /></div><div>Where as battle droids who say "Uh-oh" and ignorantly talk amongst themselves is senseless. A relatively scary or at least intimidating army of robots becomes a joke. </div><div><br /></div><div>It's as though Lucas just gave up on storytelling with the Prequels. Everything that can be is explained away in dialogue. "Master what are Midi-Chlorians?" Which is followed by a boring semi-scientific explanation which destroys the mystical energy field that surrounds and penetrates all living things. </div><div><br /></div><div>We have planned devious lies for the Improved Star Wars prequels. Some based on the Original Trilogy, and some based on the good pieces of the Prequels. One of our goals is to tell this story so that when you are done reading it you will understand the connection between the two trilogies. You will understand the true sadness of the destruction of Alderaan. You will know what will make Obi-Wan shift his point of view. Most of all you will be destroyed by the Fall of Anakin Skywalker. Join us, and read!</div><div><br /></div><div>Please make sure you click the title link for this weeks blog. It's a special easter egg! Almost the entire movie is made up of extraneous plot written only to lead up to the Clone Wars cartoon.<div><br /></div><div>The two major points of contention are Boba Fett and the Clones themselves. According to Attack of the Clones, Jango Fett was chosen to be the genetic base for a clone army created for the Republic by a Jedi Master called Sifo Diyas.</div><div><br /></div><div>According to Star Wars history from before the Prequel movies were released, the Clone Wars was a conflict about Jedi at war with cloned Jedi who had been twisted to the Dark Side. The conflict also included battles with other enemies of the Rebublic including the Mandalore warriors. </div><div><br /></div><div>Boba Fett's introduction as the unaltered clone of Jango Fett is one of the worst parts of the entire Prequel Trilogy. Especially considering that he had already been given a beautiful backstory by Daniel Keys Moran in <b>Tales of the Bounty Hunters</b>, published in 1996. This book is a collection of short stories centered around the bounty hunters introduced in the Empire Strikes Back. </div><div><br /></div><div>In this story we read the tale of Jaster Mereel, a Journeyman Protector (a sort of Police officer) from the planet Concord Dawn. He was exiled for the murder of another Protector. Jaster was offered the chance to be redeemed if he would just admit he was wrong for killing this man. He refused saying that the killing was justified because the Protector was corrupt. He was exiled, disappeared for many years and returned as the mysterious Boba Fett. No one knows exactly where, or how he acquired his Mandalorian armor.</div><div><br /></div><div>According to Official Prequel Star Wars history, Jaster Mereel was the adopted father and mentor of Jango Fett. He was a Journeyman Protector, from Concord Dawn, and was exiled exactly as mentioned. He became Mand'alor, the leader of the Mandalore Warriors. He attempted to unite them and make them into proper mercs. He was betrayed and murdered. </div><div><br /></div><div>Also according to Official Prequel history, Boba Fett later on in life took the name of Jaster Mereel and became a Journeyman Protector on Concord Dawn and was himself exiled for the same crime as his adopted grandfather. Seems rather redundant doesn't it?</div><div><br /></div><div>The saddest part of this is that Fett is a money maker and had to be in the Prequels for just that reason. Like many, I feel his story should have been left alone. It was great as it was! </div><div><br /></div><div>That is why Boba Fett will not be appearing in the Improved Star Wars Prequels. Jango Fett has been erased completely from the Improved Star Wars history. The vicious war-like Mandalore Warriors will still be a major part of the Clone Wars. </div><div><br /></div><div>The events of the Clone Wars will be represented as the second installment of the Improved Star Wars Prequels, as it should have been. Not as a stand alone cartoon used to fill the space between Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith.</div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div>Fungleberryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00204297577924663423noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6253196689922088661.post-1785577953699925892010-05-04T20:41:00.000-07:002010-05-04T21:00:50.368-07:00May the Fourth be with You....<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_LZED6DGdW0U/S-DpzRBSB8I/AAAAAAAAAGk/botD9PNs6Yw/s1600/Star+Wars+-+Handbook+%2303+-+Dark+Empire+-+09.jpg"><img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 255px; height: 400px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_LZED6DGdW0U/S-DpzRBSB8I/AAAAAAAAAGk/botD9PNs6Yw/s400/Star+Wars+-+Handbook+%2303+-+Dark+Empire+-+09.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5467627014579161026" /></a>This page, from the Dark Empire Handbook, represents a classic example of how history was taken from and twisted by the Prequels. In Attack of the Clones, the movie, we see Obi-Wan Kenobi trapped in a similar device (As seen in the image to the left) on Geonosis after he has been captured by the barely 2 dimensional character, Count Dooku.<div><br /></div><div>Why didn't we get to see the Purge of the Jedi? Why did we need to see 9 year old Anakin win a Podrace? I don't think I can ever answer these questions. Those aren't the only ones either.</div><div><br /></div><div>I will say this: George Lucas inspired me all throughout my childhood and my adulthood. My love of Star Wars was what spurred me onto studying mythology, storytelling and the visual arts. </div><div><br /></div><div>I don't know for sure why he allowed the Prequels to happen the way that he did. I have many theories. Maybe someday I will get to sit down with George one day and talk to him about it. </div><div><br /></div><div>For now, we Skywalkers will create our own version of the story. We will be so glad to share it with all of you! </div><div><br /></div><div>Don't forget! June 15th, 2010! The story takes place six years after the Rebels destroyed the Second Death Star in Return of the Jedi. A reborn clone of the Emperor returns to reunite the fragments of the Empire. </p><p style="margin: 0px; font-family: Georgia; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; font-size: 17px; line-height: normal; font-size-adjust: none; font-stretch: normal;"><br /></p><p style="margin: 0px; font-family: Georgia; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; font-size: 17px; line-height: normal; font-size-adjust: none; font-stretch: normal;">This page clearly illustrates the fact that Palpatine had been cloning himself for a long time. This is a very important plot element that was completely ignored in the Prequel Movies. This could have been used to beautifully illustrate Palpatine's motives in wanting to destroy the Jedi. </p><p style="margin: 0px; font-family: Georgia; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; font-size: 17px; line-height: normal; font-size-adjust: none; font-stretch: normal;"><br /></p><p style="margin: 0px; font-family: Georgia; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; font-size: 17px; line-height: normal; font-size-adjust: none; font-stretch: normal;">In Revenge of the Sith, Palpatine tells Anakin the Tragedy of Darth Plagueis. This is <i>almost</i> a great story! One of the few beautiful nuggets of the Original Prequels that will remain, mostly unchanged, in the Improved. </p><p style="margin: 0px; font-family: Georgia; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; font-size: 17px; line-height: normal; font-size-adjust: none; font-stretch: normal;"><br /></p><p style="margin: 0px; font-family: Georgia; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; font-size: 17px; line-height: normal; font-size-adjust: none; font-stretch: normal;">Plagueis had discovered the secret of immortality. Ironically, his apprentice murdered him in his sleep after Plagueis had taught him everything he knew. Palpatine was that apprentice, and used the lure of this power to convince Anakin to turn to the Dark Side.</p><p style="margin: 0px; font-family: Georgia; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; font-size: 17px; line-height: normal; font-size-adjust: none; font-stretch: normal;"><br /></p><p style="margin: 0px; font-family: Georgia; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; font-size: 17px; line-height: normal; font-size-adjust: none; font-stretch: normal;">In the Original Prequels the "secret" is that Plagueis could convince the midi-chlorians to keep himself and others alive. According to Palpatine only Plageuis had achieved this form of immortality. He convinces Anakin that together they could figure out the secret again. </p><p style="margin: 0px; font-family: Georgia; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; font-size: 17px; line-height: normal; font-size-adjust: none; font-stretch: normal;"><br /></p><p style="margin: 0px; font-family: Georgia; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; font-size: 17px; line-height: normal; font-size-adjust: none; font-stretch: normal;">First, This contradicts the idea that Plageuis had taught Palpatine everything he knew. </p><p style="margin: 0px; font-family: Georgia; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; font-size: 17px; line-height: normal; font-size-adjust: none; font-stretch: normal;"><br /></p><p style="margin: 0px; font-family: Georgia; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; font-size: 17px; line-height: normal; font-size-adjust: none; font-stretch: normal;">Also, Midi-chlorians have been erased from the Improved Prequels history. </p><p style="margin: 0px; font-family: Georgia; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; font-size: 17px; line-height: normal; font-size-adjust: none; font-stretch: normal;"><br /></p><p style="margin: 0px; font-family: Georgia; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; font-size: 17px; line-height: normal; font-size-adjust: none; font-stretch: normal;">Finally, Cloning is <i>not</i> the secret. </p><p style="margin: 0px; font-family: Georgia; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; font-size: 17px; line-height: normal; font-size-adjust: none; font-stretch: normal;"><br /></p><p style="margin: 0px; font-family: Georgia; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; font-size: 17px; line-height: normal; font-size-adjust: none; font-stretch: normal;">June 15th, The Phantom Menace Begins....</p><p style="margin: 0px; font-family: Georgia; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; font-size: 17px; line-height: normal; font-size-adjust: none; font-stretch: normal;"><br /></p><p style="margin: 0px; font-family: Georgia; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; font-size: 17px; line-height: normal; font-size-adjust: none; font-stretch: normal;"><br /></p><p style="margin: 0px; font-family: Georgia; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; font-size: 17px; line-height: normal; font-size-adjust: none; font-stretch: normal; color: rgb(102, 102, 102);"><br /></p><p style="margin: 0px; font-family: Georgia; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; font-size: 17px; line-height: normal; font-size-adjust: none; font-stretch: normal; color: rgb(102, 102, 102);"><br /></p><p></p>Fungleberryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00204297577924663423noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6253196689922088661.post-80861742818762800842010-04-19T22:10:00.000-07:002010-04-19T23:06:55.507-07:00Laugh it up fuzz ball!I have been reading a lot about other Prequel rewrites. There is a lot out there. Some of it is pretty good, some of it terrible. Some people take it to a whole other level! This made me very happy!<div><br /></div><div>This is a portion of my favorite so far! I'd like to thank Jonathan Wojcik a.k.a. Scythemantis for reminding me not to take things so seriously! Gotta laugh!</div><div><br /></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;">Six year old Anakin Skywalker steps outside to do his desert planet chores like planting water seeds or milking lizards or some dumb thing when suddenly a Jawa Sandcrawler pulls up in his front yard (doing this totally sweet donut in the process) and all of the Jawas just start pouring out of it, like buckets of fucking Jawas flying out in every direction and start beating him with mangled droid arms. They bust into his house and fuck everything up. He has to watch them trade his hot mom to Jabba the Hutt (who is all making out with her and shit in front of him) in exchange for this bitching awesome hat (it has LED lights that spell out "SLUTS" in Jawa talk) and keep Anakin around to scrape off sand barnacles or whatever space problem you get when you drive Sandcrawlers. Over the course of eight years he pieces together Threepio from droid scraps to keep his sanity but the Jawas find the droid before it even gets turned on on and they sell it to some space guy who uses it . Anakin gets so pissed that he goes and gets the awesome hat and he punches this big hole in the top. The Jawas are so mad they throw him in the sarlaac and he is digested for 1,000 years in horrible pain. SPOILER: he was not that Anakin Skywalker!!</span></span></div><div><br /></div><div><a href="http://www.cracked.com/forums/topic/54361/how-would-you-rewrite-star-wars-prequels">Original Post</a></div><div><br /></div><div><a href="http://www.bogleech.com/">Bogleech.com</a> This is Jon's site. Jar Jar Binks. <br /><br /><br />2. The Planet Naboo. <br /><br /><br />3. 9 year old Anakin Skywalker. <br /><br /><br />4. Podracing. <br /><br /><br />5. The Droid Army. <br /><br /><br />6. Tatooine. <br /><br /><br />This is a short synopsis of what will happen in Star Wars: The Phantom Menace.<br /><br />Palpatine's puppet, Lord Maul, leads a group of Sith devotees and Non-Human races. They blockade the planet Alderaan, the shining jewel of the galaxy, in protest of their mistreatment by the very corrupt Republic. Two Jedi Knights are sent to resolve the issue.<br /><br />Yoda and Obi-Wan are attacked before negotiations can even start. They escape to Alderaan hiding in the landing ships of the Sith Army, which is composed mostly of non-force using troops, and no droids. The Sith have spent a thousand years in exile, but many secret groups existed throughout those years building strength.<br /><br />Anakin will enter The Phantom Menace at 18. Obi-Wan and Yoda rescue him on Alderaan while making their way to the Capital City Aldera. Flying in Anakin's ship they are chased by Sith Fighters lead by the Sith Witch, Ventress.<br /><br />Anakin's amazing piloting skills are the only reason they safely reach Aldera. Obi-Wan and Yoda both recognize Anakin's potential. Yoda warns Obi-Wan not to let his pride control his actions. Amidala Organa, the twin sister of Bail Organa, and Anakin are immediately attracted to eachother. The King is dead, murdered by Sith agents. Amidala will go to Coruscant, she wants to know what would push these Non-Human races into aligning with such obvious evil.<br /><br />They escape Alderaan, with Princess Amidala Organa, and go to Coruscant. She speaks on behalf of Alderaan, attempting to avoid all out war. Other Senators, call for just that. War against the Sith and the Non-Human Races that have aligned with them. Meanwhile Qui-Gon Jinn, a leading member of the Jedi Council, with unanimous vote of the Council refuse Anakin's wish to be trained as a Jedi. Obi-Wan then takes it upon himself to begin to train him secretly, believing he can instruct Anakin just as well as Yoda. Palpatine quietly watches as the pieces fall into place.<br /><br />Against Princess Amidala's wishes, The Senate mobilizes the Republic Army to protect Alderaan. The Jedi Council forbids any Jedi to join the conflict, telling them to be patient because there has not been a full scale war in a thousand years. They are very worried that the younger Jedi, who have never seen battle, will not be able to deal with the horrors of war.<br /><br />Obi-Wan and Anakin rally a few thousand of those very same young Jedi and rush off to fight for Alderaan. Yoda is terribly disappointed in Obi-Wan. My name is Joe and I have been working on illustrations with Caleb for quite some time. To say that we have been the closest of friends all of our lives is an understatement! This Star Wars project is something we have been talking about since the epic let down of the prequel movies. I will be working as the colorist/designer and general handyman! I am super excited and honored to be a part of this project! If you like, you can check out my own personal work <a href="http://www.blogger.com/visualsquid.blogspot.com">here</a>.<br /><br />Thanks!!<br />We just returned from an extremely fun and inspiring weekend at PAX East. We passed out somewhere around 800 flyers in total and I would like to extend my sincerest gratitude to everyone who took the time to stop and listen to me blather on about Yoda! All in all, I would say that PAX East was a resounding success in every possible way! Things are already off to a great start here and we can't wait to show you what's in store!<br /><br />Stay tuned!<br />-JoeJoseph Bastardohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14879746697573714067noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6253196689922088661.post-82006149507377363952010-03-27T15:38:00.000-07:002010-03-27T15:54:20.481-07:00Thank you PAXers! The Penny Arcade Expo! What a beautiful day! Brought 400 flyers with me to promote and they were all gone in less than a half an hour! Thanks to all who visit! Remember I'm doing this for love, not revenge or money. George did what he did and now I'm gonna do what I have to do! <br /><br />I create because of a passion for storytelling.<br /><br />I love Star Wars because it is great storytelling. Or at least the Original Trilogy is. <br /><br />Maybe, just maybe George made the prequels so bad just to inspire the rest of us to get off our butts and create something!<br /><br />We will never know for sure. <br /><br />I do know that I love PAX and I am again so grateful for everyone who talked to me today!Fungleberryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00204297577924663423noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6253196689922088661.post-80175169417286394322010-03-26T10:30:00.000-07:002010-03-26T11:13:25.049-07:00Kenobi's pride had terrible consequences for the Galaxy<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_LZED6DGdW0U/S6zwW-6w6lI/AAAAAAAAACM/QIcAyoHR6Po/s1600/obiwan.jpg"><img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 260px; height: 400px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_LZED6DGdW0U/S6zwW-6w6lI/AAAAAAAAACM/QIcAyoHR6Po/s400/obiwan.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5452997526476089938" /></a><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_LZED6DGdW0U/S6zwL2XgioI/AAAAAAAAACE/Su-U5m5GTC8/s1600/obiwan.jpg"></a>Fungleberryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00204297577924663423noreply@blogger.com2
